The intent of our art curriculum is to deliver a curriculum which is accessible to all and that will maximise the development of every child’s ability in Art. Art allows our children to be creative, express their individual interests, using their imagination, providing children the opportunity to develop intellectually, emotionally, physically and socially.
We aim to:
- Provide opportunities for children to express themselves through a range of artistic styles and different mediums.
- Encourage our children to take a pride in their own achievements and to respect their own and others’ work. By looking at the work of other artists, children will be helped to understand that there is no “correct model” and that art is a response to the world around us.
- Use the work of children and established artists to provide a colourful and stimulating environment throughout the school.
- Encourage pupils’ development of creative, imaginative and practical skills through a balanced programme of art skills, working individually, in groups and as a whole class.
- Confidently use technical vocabulary related to art.
We draw on the wealth of art in our local area by facilitating trips to museums such as Penryn Museum, and we work closely with The Falmouth art gallery.
Nursery
In Nursery, the children explore different materials freely, to develop their ideas about how to use them and what to make. They explore colour and colour mixing and begin to show different emotions in their drawings and paintings – using colour. The children use continuous lines and begin to use these shapes to represent objects increasing complexity and detail.
Reception
In Reception, the children complete activities based on topic work, seasonal changes and children’s interests that promote the following skills:
- Using & naming colours.
- Colour mixing activities (including marbling)
- Selecting colour for a particular purpose
- Explores shades of colour
- Making marks with different tools such as pencils and paintbrushes.
- Using tools to create simple representations of events, people and places.
- Handling and manipulating different media – collage
- Representations are more detailed (observational drawings)
Year 1
In Year 1, the children access art through continuous provision. The resources, medium, artists and skills are introduced to the children after explicit instruction is given. Children use continuous provision to extend their learning in the following ways:
- Colour mixing and naming colours.
- Using different medium such as charcoal, paint, and pastels.
- To explore mark making, line drawing and using 2D shapes to draw.
- To use materials such as clay, printing and collage.
Year 2
In Year 2, children explore different materials to create shades, tones and texture. The children use a range of materials creatively to design and make products using overlapping and overlaying to create effects. They experiment with tools and surfaces to record light/dark whilst observing shadows. The children begin to describe colours by tone and learn to make as many tones of one colour as possible.
Year 3
In Year 3, the children observe, review and evaluate their own work as well as other artists. They begin drawing from direct observation, applying some tonal shading. The children use some different media and materials to communicate my ideas through painting, sewing and sculpting.
Year 4
In Year 4, the children explore environmental and manmade patterns – tessellation. They use a wider variety of stitches through textural art. They compare different fabrics, moods and evaluate how these make people feel. The children identify and draw the effect of light with scale and proportion
Year 5
In Year 5, the children explore the use of texture in colour and the specific purpose colour has. They produce increasingly accurate drawings using hue, tint, tone, shades and mood. The children create patterns for purpose using a range of materials and mediums.
In Year 6 improve their mastery of art and design techniques, including drawing, painting and sculpture with a range of materials (for example, pencil, charcoal, paint, clay). They study great artists, architects and designers in history. The children use sketch books to record observations, evaluate and improve their ideas.
